i have verizon dsl service for my cctv at my business. i also want to connect my laptop to the internet without having to take out the cable from the dvr. i'm thinking i can split it with a router, but was wondering if anyone can confirm if that's the right way, %26amp; if so, if the static ip address will create any problems i'm not aware of. does hardware matter or can i go with the cheapest router? any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. thx.How can i split a modem with a static ip?
Avoid the cheapest.
Netgear and D-Link are good options, go with the gaming routers if you can afford it. They tend to be a bit more robust.
You may have to do some port forwarding in the router configuration to allow remote viewing of the CCTV system. The information needed for that is available in the CCTV users manual. How can i split a modem with a static ip?
Your network should look something like this:
wall line ---%26gt; [2-way splitter] ---%26gt; modem ---%26gt; [router] ---%26gt; laptop
[router] ---%26gt; CCTV
---%26gt; [2-way splitter] ---%26gt; DVR
Having a static IP shouldn't matter if you're getting your internet through a router. Any off-the-shelf wireless router will do.
