During WW2,the American government devised a plan to divide Germany and Austria into three zones of occupation once the war ended.The plan was known as Rankin C.The British and Russians accepted the plan.Later,the Americans tried to amend the plan to give France a zone of occupation.The Russians objected but the Americans gave France some territory from their zone.The Russians retaliated by giving Poland a zone formed from their territory.When Cold War tensions rose and NATO was formed in 1949,the Western Allies of France,Britain,and the US combined their zones into the nation of West Germany.The Russians declared their zone to be East Germany,but comprised only of German land west of the Oder River.German lands east of the Oder became a part of Poland and Russia itself.In 1990 as part of the unification of East and West Germany,a treaty was signed in which Germany forever ceded its land east of the Oder River.
They got invaded by the US from the West side, and the Soviet Union from the East side. After defeating Germany, the Soviet Union and the United States decided not to start another war with each other, and Germany was divided into East and West Germany.
At the end of WW2 France, England and the US Occupied Western Germany and Communist Russia occupied Eastern Germany.
